OpenAI's Aura Safety Check Can Silently Block Sites From ChatGPT
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • OpenAI uses a central site-safety check (referred to internally as Aura) that decides whether browsing tools like ChatGPT live search and Codex Browser Use may open a site, overriding local user settings and robots.txt.
  • The block fails closed, overrides custom allow rules, caches the decision locally for 24 hours, and offers no public way to learn why a domain was flagged or to appeal.
  • One media publisher stayed blocked since May 2026 while competitors loaded fine. Its site served only ~5,000 crawls to OpenAI in 30 days versus 477,000 for Google and 564,000 for Anthropic.
  • To diagnose a false block:
    • Test the same URLs across ChatGPT live fetch, cloud browser, and Codex, with competitor sites as controls in the same session
    • Confirm your CDN and server logs show no inbound request at the failed timestamp
    • Build an evidence pack, open a support case, and ask whether the domain has a site-safety classification and how to request a review

HubSpot Lost 80% of Organic Traffic While Revenue Kept Growing
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • HubSpot's blog peaked above 20 million organic visits a month and lost ~80% of that as AI answers spread, including nearly 5 million visits in one 30-day period after AI Overviews rolled out, yet revenue grew nearly 20% in 2025.
  • CMO Kipp Bodnar says visitors still arriving, especially from AI answers, convert at roughly 3x the rate of traditional search, and qualified leads from AI answers grew 1,850% between Q1 2025 and Q1 2026.
  • About 90% of HubSpot's content leads now come from channels built over 5 years (newsletter, creators, podcasts, YouTube), with the blog at ~10%, and it pruned more than 3,000 underperforming blog pages.
  • HubSpot replaced sessions with revenue per visit, AI share of voice, and content-influenced pipeline, and tracks both AI mentions and citations across priority prompts.
  • Bodnar says AI prompts now run 40-100 words versus 2-4 word searches, so content should answer the full question in plain, chunked language.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

Google Says AI Mode Ads Monetize Lower Than Traditional Search
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Philipp Schindler said on Alphabet's earnings call that ads in AI Mode currently have lower monetization than ads in traditional search, and that strong AI Mode query growth weighed on Search results.
  • That contrasts with Google's earlier claim that ads in AI Overviews earn the same as without them, a statement Schindler said was specific to AI Overviews, not AI Mode.
  • Google is scaling ads in both AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries, expanding into international markets and adding multiturn ads in the U.S.
  • Schindler attributed the Q2 to Q3 search deceleration to FX, the EU eliminating its de minimis exception hitting APAC retail advertisers, and media spend normalizing after a World Cup-heavy Q2.

Google's Ads Decoded on How AI Mode Changes Search Behavior
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Google says queries in AI Mode run 3x longer than traditional searches and more than one in 6 U.S. AI Mode searches are multimodal, though it did not specify baseline definitions or measurement windows.
  • Ginny Marvin and Shivani Mohan described 3 shifts for advertisers planning 2027:
    • Discovery moves up the funnel as people use conversational search for brainstorming before a purchase decision
    • Curiosity expands through longer, multimodal, back-and-forth queries
    • Users still crave human perspectives from forums, podcasts, and video reviews alongside AI summaries
  • Google supplied no conversion benchmarks, so longer questions reveal more about needs but do not by themselves show stronger buying intent.

German Courts Hold Google Liable for False AI Search Answers
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • The Regional Court of Aachen ordered Google to stop 3 versions of an AI Mode answer that attached a real criminal case to the wrong doctor, with fines up to 250,000 euros per violation.
  • Aachen adopted reasoning from a May Munich ruling that held Google directly liable for AI Overviews and described its AI output as "independent, new, and substantive statements," rejecting the argument that users can verify source links.
  • A Berlin court took the opposite view in June, treating AI Overviews as a new search result format rather than Google speaking for itself, and no higher court has settled the split.
  • The failure pattern is entity conflation, where a system fuses facts from 2 entities sharing a name, role, or location into one confident answer.
  • Pew found users clicked a link inside AI summaries on just 1% of searches. Suggested defenses include name-plus-event queries, Organization and Person schema with sameAs links, and publishing your own account when something material changes.

Google Tests Query Refinement Bubbles Atop AI Overviews
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google is testing query refinement bubbles at the top of AI Overviews, spotted by Gagan Ghotra for some languages.
  • Clicking a bubble does not change the search results. Instead it sends the user into AI Mode with the bubble text as the prompt.

Technical SEO

How To Tell If Your Images Are Optimized for Multimodal Search
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Google Search Console added a "Multimodal" option under the Web search type filter, covering Google Lens, Circle to Search, uploaded images, and Chrome's "Search this image."
  • Confirm images are crawlable and indexable by checking robots.txt, noimageindex, and X-Robots-Tag headers, and use the src: operator in Google Images to see which pages reference an image URL.
  • Check Googlebot-Image activity in log files or Screaming Frog for 3XX, 4XX, or 5XX responses, and watch for JavaScript rendering, lazy loading, CSS background images, and session-parameter URLs that create duplicates.
  • Use XML image sitemaps with image:image and image:loc, serve supported formats (JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF), and keep one consistent URL per image.

Google Recommends Custom 404 Pages, Says 404s Aren't an SEO Problem
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Gary Illyes and Cherry Sireetorn Prommawin said 404s are a natural part of the web with no penalty, no ranking impact, and they do not consume crawl budget the way server errors do.
  • Google frames fixing 404s as a business and user experience decision rather than an SEO requirement, based on whether the missing page still has value to visitors.
  • Their 3-step approach:
    • Use a one-to-one redirect only when a genuine replacement exists
    • Return a 404 or 410 when there is no true successor
    • Design a custom 404 page with a friendly message, search bar, and links to top content
  • Do not redirect all dead pages to the homepage, which confuses users and muddies your data.

Search Console Shows Only a Sample of Links
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google confirmed the Search Console links report shows only a sampling, including disavowed links, so missing spammy links does not mean Google is unaware of them.
  • Mueller told an SEO worried about daily spammy links that appear in Semrush but not Search Console to just ignore random spammy links.
  • Since Penguin 4.0 Google devalues bad links rather than demoting pages, and it has repeatedly warned against disavowing based on third-party toxic link metrics.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Alphabet Q3 Selloff Renews Advertiser Concerns Over AI Search Costs
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Alphabet shares fell ~13% after Q3 results showed slower Search revenue growth, $51.36 billion in capital expenditures, and negative free cash flow of $9.07 billion.
  • Marketers including Max Anderson argued Google is sustaining revenue by charging more for lower quality traffic, citing broader keyword matching, auction pricing, and campaigns spending twice their daily budgets.
  • Google's published rules explain some of this. Ad Rank thresholds can produce high CPCs without another eligible ad below yours, and daily budgets are averages that can spend up to 2x in a day.
  • Google combines AI Mode performance with standard campaign reporting, so advertisers cannot cleanly compare AI Mode acquisition costs, conversion rates, or lead quality against other Search traffic.

Mueller on AI Content Tactics, Crawl Stats, and Technical SEO
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • John Mueller said listicles aren't inherently spam, but relying on thousands of them is risky because systems eventually recognize and discount shortcut tactics, comparing them to keyword stuffing and white-on-white text.
  • He flagged the Crawl Stats report as underused, worth checking for unusual activity or sudden increases in crawl time before Google reduces crawling.
  • Mueller said long redirect chains aren't automatically a problem since Google learns the current destination, and confirmed the URL Parameters tool is gone for good.
  • For ecommerce, use official product attributes but keep product names in customer language, and he expects technical SEO to remain relevant as AI systems build on it.
