Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Study links direct answers and other page traits to AI citations
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • TJ Robertson analyzed 193,507 AI answers from ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Cited pages opened with a direct answer to the question more often than comparison pages in 2 blind rating rounds.
  • Cited pages led with a direct answer 23% of the time vs 14% for pages the same answer retrieved but did not cite, and 20% vs 5% against Google Top-10 pages the AI never pulled.
  • Odds of being cited (adjusting for Ahrefs Domain Rating and page type):
    • Year in the title: 2x+ odds
    • Publish or update date in past 12 months: +88%
    • Tables: +69%
    • First-hand experience: +45%
    • Prices: +28%
    • Schema markup: +13%
    • Author byline: -28%; call to action: -12%
  • Robertson frames the results as associations, not causation. Just under a quarter of cited pages did not answer the question within the portion raters reviewed.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

Google Q3 earnings tie search slowdown to lower AI Mode monetization
Sources: Search Engine Journal · Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google Search & Other revenue rose 12% YoY to $63.35 billion but was essentially flat quarter over quarter, with growth decelerating from 19% in Q1 and 17% in Q2. Alphabet revenue grew 25% to $127.6 billion.
  • CBO Philipp Schindler named lower AI Mode monetization as one of 3 drivers of the slowdown, alongside currency and retail. Each AI Mode query currently earns less than a traditional search, which he said should improve over time.
  • Sundar Pichai said AI investment is driving commercial query growth and that the YoY query growth rate is the highest in 5 years.
  • Google is scaling ads in AI Mode to 10 more countries:
    • Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore
    • Multiturn (follow-on question) ads launching in the US, with Brazil, Mexico, and the UK planned for Q4
  • Alphabet stock fell ~11% after hours as free cash flow ($9.07 billion) and operating income ($40.58 billion) missed analyst forecasts.

Google launches Connected Apps Platform for Search and Gemini
Sources: Search Engine Roundtable · Google Search Product News

  • Google opened a preview of its Connected Apps Platform, a single place for developers to build and manage apps that run inside Search and the Gemini app.
  • Developers integrate via a cloud-hosted MCP server or Android MCP using the AppFunctions APIs, then register, test, and submit through the Google Connected Console, choosing Search, Gemini, or both.
  • More than 50 Connected Apps are live across areas like productivity, ticketing, and health, with partners including Adobe, Experian, Localiza, Peloton, and Calm, starting in Gemini and coming to Search in the following weeks.
  • Users must add an app to their personalized Search settings for it to appear. Marie Haynes framed the launch as Search becoming an "agent manager" where functionality, not just information, gets you found.

Google tests "Fan POV" button on sports queries
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google added a "Fan POV" button on some sports queries such as [world series] that opens dropdowns to pick a game and a team fan perspective before launching into AI Mode.
  • Mordy Oberstein described it as personalization plus an attempt to add an emotive take and break the stoic tone of AI results.

Technical SEO

Illyes names hreflang's "alternate names" behavior
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • In August 2026 Gary Illyes described the long-documented behavior where Google serves the correct country or language URL even when only one page in an hreflang cluster is indexed, calling these "alternate names."
  • Discovery, canonicalization, indexing, scoring, and serving are separate stages, and a URL does not have to pass through all of them independently to appear in search.
  • Hreflang acts as a cross-reference that routes which URL is shown, not a ranking signal. Adding it never created a ranking across tens of thousands of implementations.
  • As retrieval goes semantic, near-duplicate market pages offer no unique evidence to retrieve. Give each market page genuinely local content (regulations, warranties, pricing, use cases) rather than relying on hreflang to differentiate.

Google expands UGC spam guidelines to publishing platforms and tools
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Google updated its user-generated spam policy to explicitly cover hosting platforms and tools that let users publish shared pages, generated content, or web apps, signaling these sites can face manual actions for user spam.
  • Platforms should noindex content meant for direct sharing or utility rather than search discovery, using a robots meta tag, X-Robots-Tag, or robots.txt blocking by default.
  • Google advises verifying in Search Console for alerts and monitoring the Page Indexing and performance reports for spikes in indexed pages or a few users generating many indexable URLs.
  • SEOs should audit whether clients exploit third-party publishing platforms for links or AI search influence.

Google reiterates 404 errors are not scary for SEO
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google's Non-Canonical Cabinet video restates that 404s cause no penalties, don't harm healthy pages, and don't drain crawl budget.
  • Gary Illyes gave a 3-step framework for dead URLs:
    • Redirect one-to-one only when a genuinely relevant replacement exists
    • Return a 404 or 410 when the page is permanently gone with no successor
    • Improve the 404 page with a helpful message, search box, and links to top content
  • Don't redirect all 404s to the homepage, which confuses users and produces misleading data.
  • HTTP 500-class and 429 errors are the real concern, signaling a struggling server and prompting Google to slow crawling.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Microsoft reported search and advertising revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs up 12%, 2 points higher than the prior quarter's 10%.
  • Overall revenue rose 19% to $92.3 billion, operating income up 22% to $45.9 billion, and net income up 32% to $36.6 billion. Search sits in the More Personal Computing division.

Bitly survey on short links, homepage mismatches, and deliberate non-clicks
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • The Click Expectation Report surveyed 1,507 Americans (1,006 consumers, 501 marketers and creators) between July 27-August 5, 2026.
  • 79% of consumers abandoned an action when a social link went to a generic homepage instead of the featured product. Only 8% expect a homepage and 61% expect a product page, yet 34% of marketers and creators route links to the homepage anyway.
  • 93% said they have avoided clicking a link on purpose to stop the algorithm serving more of that content, and 43% do so always or often, undercutting CTR as a measure of interest.
  • Click hesitation drivers: security concerns 57%, clickbait feel 52%, vague descriptions 44%, with generic brand-hiding shorteners near the bottom at 23%.
  • The sample is an opt-in, unweighted panel, so quote figures as "Bitly's survey found" rather than as representative consumer data.
