Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

The AI search measurement gap: track recommendation rate, not just awareness
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Across 59 answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Overviews, Tony Uphoff's newsletter appeared in 0 of 12 category answers and his firm in 1 of 43, even though every engine knew his career.
  • G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers found 51% now start research with an AI chatbot more than Google (up from 29%), 69% said a chatbot led them to a different vendor, and ~33% bought from a vendor they had never heard of.
  • Answer engines default to the most-repeated, often oldest web record about a brand, and a Corporate Ink study found only 29% of marketers actively track AI visibility.
  • Add a recommendation rate to your scorecard: write 10-15 buyer-style prompts, run them weekly across the major engines, and track how often you make the list and whether the description is accurate.
  • Fix the record the models read before chasing shortlists: update bios, LinkedIn, and press pages you control, request corrections from aggregators, then earn placement on the roundup pages engines cite.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

Google Q3 earnings: strongest query growth in five years, lower AI Mode monetization
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Google reported its strongest year-over-year query growth in 5 years, crediting AI Mode for additional searches including commercial queries. Search revenue grew 12% year over year to $63 billion.
  • Schindler conceded AI Mode monetizes at a lower rate than classic Search, and named foreign exchange as the single largest driver of Search deceleration from Q2 to Q3.
  • Pichai framed AI agents as a new stage for Search, shifting it toward task completion (booking, forms, purchases) connected across Search, Gemini, Chrome, Android, and Workspace.
  • Record query growth coincides with the lowest referral levels to the open web, and nothing in the agentic plan points to Google sending more clicks out to publishers.

Case study pegs AI Overviews CTR near 0.9% and finds a SERP halo effect
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Cyrus Shepard used Google's generative AI opt-out to run a before/after test and estimated AI impressions carried a ~0.9% click-through rate, with AI impressions making up ~8% of total impressions.
  • When he opted the site out of AI Overviews and AI Mode, regular organic clicks also dropped, which he framed as a "Search SERP Halo Effect" where appearing in more places lifts clicks anywhere on the page.
  • URLs with the most AI visibility dropped while opted out and rose again when AI visibility was restored. Greg Sterling added that Near Media sees AI Overviews create brand lift that feeds later searches and clicks.

Bing shows ads inside its Copilot-powered AI Overviews

  • Microsoft is running sponsored results within Bing's AI Overviews, per a screenshot shared by Khushal Bherwani, though the rollout appears limited and not everyone can trigger it.
  • Bing renamed its Copilot Search box to AI Overviews a few months ago, and ads inside those AI responses had not been widely seen before.

Technical SEO

What Search Console still tells you when indexing data lags
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • A Reddit post reported the Page indexing report had not updated since Oct. 16, with other established sites affected. As of Oct. 29 Google listed the report with "No recent issues."
  • Mueller said indexing changes show up in the Performance report first, that Google prioritizes faster updates where most beneficial, and that Google does not back-fill indexing data.
  • An old last-updated date shows how current a report is but not whether URLs were indexed or dropped. Use URL Inspection for a specific URL's status, noting its example list caps at 1,000 rows.
  • When reporting, export with dates, add the report's last-updated date to the chart, and compare both the date range and the number of entries to catch missed intervals.

Google, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Anthropic back a shared robots.txt AI training control
Sources: Search Engine Roundtable · Search Engine Roundtable

  • The 4 providers will voluntarily adopt an IETF AIPREF signal that lets publishers express AI training preferences across providers in a single robots.txt policy token instead of listing each one.
  • Google plans to support "user-agent: __usage_ai-training" in early 2027, and will treat opting out via the token (when Google-Extended is not specified) as if the publisher had disallowed Google-Extended.
  • Microsoft's Bing goes further with 3 page-level controls:
    • AI Training, to allow or block use for model training
    • AI Grounding, to allow or block use in generated answers
    • Limited Grounding, allowing Microsoft's own AI products but not third-party grounding
  • Bing's timeline runs from Dec. 15, 2026 (temporary grounding controls in Webmaster Tools) through Feb. 1 and Mar. 1, 2027 configuration milestones to Sept. 30, 2027 expiry of temporary preferences.
  • Traditional Bing rankings and existing company-specific controls like Google-Extended keep working alongside the new industry signal, so publishers can set a broad choice and still tailor per provider.

Gary Illyes: AI has made Googlebot impersonation worse
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Illyes said bot impersonation is a bigger problem now because companies harvest content to train models, and anyone can fake a Googlebot user-agent in about 30 seconds.
  • He described robots.txt as a suggestion, not a security mechanism. Use network-level protections such as a WAF or a CDN with bot management to block unwanted traffic.
  • Verify Googlebot by checking Google's published IP ranges and reverse DNS rather than trusting the user-agent string, and monitor logs for suspicious crawl patterns.
  • Illyes floated longer-term ideas including Web Bot Auth cryptographically signed requests and a crawler reputation system, while warning one-company control could add bias.

Google appears to bring back the num=100 results parameter
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Brodie Clark reported Google seems to have restored num=100 in some capacity, surfacing 99 organic results, though others could not replicate it.
  • Google dropped num=100 in September 2025 to curb scraping of its results, which broke many third-party rank trackers.
  • Clark also noted /goto links are bypassing previous workarounds, likely a further issue for some rank trackers.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Reddit blames AI Overviews for traffic drop, will test login-only mode
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Reddit told shareholders that search referrals dropped by more than 1 million per week on average during October, following a Q3 in which referral traffic fell meaningfully.
  • CEO Steve Huffman named Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode as the biggest part of Reddit's hypothesis for the decline, and said AI Mode "does not drive traffic" for Reddit or anyone he knows of.
  • If the current rate continues, Reddit says Q4 daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage from its base of 130 million.
  • Reddit will fully test a logged-in-only experience in select markets outside the U.S. this quarter, deciding how much of a thread a visitor arriving from Google sees before a login prompt.
  • COO Jen Wong said Reddit is "pretty skeptical of GEO" and that generative engine optimization is not part of its advertiser partnerships today.

The link building graveyard: what to bury and what still wins
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Michael Johnson of Resolve set one test for a worthwhile link: it should benefit the brand, the publisher, and the publisher's audience, not just raise a link count.
  • Don't let Domain Authority or Domain Rating drive placement decisions. Check topical relevance first, then the keywords a site actually ranks for rather than a raw traffic estimate.
  • His cut list: private blog networks, link-swap schemes, forced commercial anchors, and generic roundup requests.
  • Tactics that stay when execution serves readers:
    • Guest contributions built around subject expertise
    • Broken-link and resource-page outreach with a fitting asset
    • Unlinked brand mentions worth converting to links
    • Expert commentary with substantive expertise
  • Johnson's 90-day plan: audit current link spend, baseline relevant AI buying prompts, identify worthwhile publishers, build datasets or tools worth citing, then pitch and track referring domains alongside AI visibility and rankings.
