Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Rebutting the case that GEO is a distraction on referral data
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Marie Haynes argued GEO is a misplaced investment, citing 145 million sessions across 100+ sites where ChatGPT visits were under 1% of Google search volume.
  • A follow-up study of 108 million sessions (Jan 1-Nov 2, 2026, 57 sites) found trackable AI traffic at 0.66% of total, ~7 AI users per 1,000 search users, though some sites saw 20-25.
  • ChatGPT visitors converted at ~14% versus 3% for standard search, roughly a 5x advantage.
  • Counting immediate site visits understates influence because conversational answers shape purchase decisions before any click, and later branded searches get credited to organic search instead of the chat interface.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

Alphabet names AI Mode as a drag on Q3 search revenue
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Search & other revenue grew 12% to $63.35 billion in Q3, down from 19% in Q1 and 17% in Q2, and ~$1.6 billion below analyst expectations, the second straight quarter search missed estimates.
  • Chief business officer Philipp Schindler named strong AI Mode query growth as a cause, citing the lower monetization Google sees in AI Mode.
  • Google listed 4 drivers of the slowdown, 3 temporary and one structural:
    • Foreign exchange, called the single largest driver
    • Asia-Pacific retail pullback after the EU ended its de minimis exemption
    • Media and entertainment spend normalizing after a World Cup-inflated Q2
    • AI Mode queries growing faster than they earn, the only factor that widens with adoption
  • Schindler said click-through rates "are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode," and Google is scaling ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, taking AI Mode ads international, and adding multi-turn ads in the US.
  • Establish a baseline now by recording which AI answers cite you, which cite competitors, and which already carry sponsored units, before ad load inside AI Mode scales. Alphabet shares fell ~13%, the steepest one-day drop on record.

Adthena counts ads inside Google AI answers and ChatGPT
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Adthena found ~175,100 paid placements inside Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in the US from June-September across 5 holiday categories, concentrated in apparel and consumer electronics.
  • Google placement breakdown by category:
    • Apparel ~111,000
    • Consumer electronics ~55,000
    • Travel ~6,500
    • Beauty ~2,100
    • Toys and games ~685
  • The report counted 204,489 ChatGPT ad placements across the same 5 categories, with advertiser counts rising from 1,082 in June to 6,333 in August.
  • US AI Overviews appearances rose from 304 million to 575 million (89%) between August 2025 and August 2026, with UK/EU up 160% and Australia up 536%.
  • All existing Search, Shopping, and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible for AI answers. Advertisers cannot target only those surfaces but can apply negative keywords and brand exclusions.

Technical SEO

November GSC click spikes are bot traffic, not human searchers
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Between Oct 31 and Nov 2, 2026, a subset of sites saw sudden 2x-6.5x spikes in Search Console clicks while impressions and rankings stayed flat, pointing to bot or agent retrieval rather than human traffic.
  • Pages ranking on Pages 2-6 (Positions 12-54) logged 45-100% CTR across dozens of one-off query variations, mostly on Desktop, while mobile trendlines stayed normal.
  • On Site C, a single troubleshooting page jumped to 40 clicks (all from Canada) across 23 slightly reworded variations with systematic number permutations, resembling synthetic query fan-out from an AI research agent.
  • Ways to filter the noise:
    • Exclude a single spiked URL with a top-bar Page filter, or filter out the affected country
    • Switch to Device: Mobile as a sanity check on the legitimate trendline
    • Filter the Pages tab by Position greater than 10 to surface affected deep-ranking URLs
  • No action is needed on the pages themselves. Annotate early November 2026 in reporting so clients understand the spike.

Google explains how redirects affect canonicalization and ranking signals
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Gary Illyes and Cherry Prommawin said a page will be indexed regardless of which redirect is used. The redirect only influences which URL becomes the canonical.
  • Both 301 and 302 help Google cluster similar pages, but only the 301 (permanent) affects canonicalization and transfers ranking signals to the new URL.
  • A 302 (temporary) keeps the old URL in results and largely ignores the new one, so no ranking signals transfer.
  • 307 and 308 are modern versions of 302 and 301 that preserve POST data, useful for failover on form submissions.
  • Use server-side HTTP redirects rather than JavaScript or meta refresh, which force the browser to download and parse the page before redirecting.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Facebook Answers floods Google with AI-generated pages
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Facebook has indexed over 6 million AI-generated pages under facebook.com/fb-answers/, which rank across 10 blue links, AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini.
  • Each page is an AI-generated summary of a topic built from public Facebook posts by individuals and pages, which Saul Westbrook first documented.
  • Glenn Gabe labeled the directory "Scaled content abuse," noting it ranks for millions of queries across surfaces.
  • Rumors suggest Instagram is doing something similar, and the pages may not stay indexed long now that the practice is public.
