SEO Recap covering October 7, 2026: GPT-6 launches and a predicted Google update
Daily summary of what matters in SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI search generated with Claude Code (beware of hallucinations)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
AI search is changing the website's job, not replacing it
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Newfold Digital CEO Sachin Puri argues the website remains the authoritative, business-owned source AI systems read to describe and book a business, even when the customer never visits it.
- A 90-day Bluehost analysis found 83.4 million verified AI crawler requests per day, split roughly 90% model training, 9% search indexing, and 1% live assistant fetching.
- Bluehost estimated one observable ChatGPT referral visit for every 5,350 verified HTML crawl requests, and stressed crawler volume is not a conversion rate.
- Track AI presence on 3 axes rather than crawl volume:
- Visibility: does the business appear or get cited
- Accuracy: are prices, services, locations, and hours correct
- Action: does exposure drive a referral, booking, or revenue
- Bluehost research found only 13% of small businesses are optimizing for assistant visibility, and while 79% were aware of AI agents, only 16% had deployed one. Test unbranded customer questions in ChatGPT or Gemini to see what surfaces.
AI in Search / AI Overviews
OpenAI rolls out GPT-6 in ChatGPT with new Intelligent UI
Source: Search Engine Journal
- GPT-6 began rolling out in the Chat tab for Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, extending to Free and Go the next day, and replaces the "Latest" option in the model menu while GPT-5.6 Sol stays available.
- Plans in the first wave run on GPT-6 Sol, while Free and Go run on GPT-6 Luna. The Pro thinking level continues on GPT-6 Astra and does not support the new UI.
- The Intelligent UI lets GPT-6 decide each response layout, adding buttons, forms, charts, and on-demand tools like a savings calculator or bill splitter that users run inside the chat.
- OpenAI says GPT-6 Instant starts answering 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant on queries needing web search, and can begin answering before it finishes thinking.
- The announcement does not explain how sources appear when answers render as charts, comparisons, or tools, though web-search answers can still surface citations via a Sources button.
Google tests "add to calendar" in AI Overviews
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google is testing an "add to calendar" link on event dates within AI Overviews and AI Mode, spotted by Khushal Bherwani and Radu Oncescu.
- The feature is inconsistent and hard to replicate, disappearing on query refresh, which points to a limited test.
Technical SEO
Google drops review snippets for healthcare pages
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google appears to have stopped showing review rich results for healthcare pages that add review or aggregateRating schema, with drops seen since late May and again in early August.
- Schema App's testing of alternative property paths and multi-typing healthcare entities with Product did not restore the snippets, suggesting a Google-side change rather than markup errors.
- Keep schema semantically accurate to correctly define physicians, locations, services, and specialties for search and AI systems, since earning a specific rich result is now a smaller part of an advanced markup strategy.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Lily Ray predicts another major Google update is imminent
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Google updates its documentation with clues before major updates, and recent changes point to a big one coming.
- On October 1 Google rewrote its generative AI guidance to call it "critical" to manually fact-check all AI content before publishing, including titles, meta descriptions, structured data, and alt text.
- Google added a "main content" definition naming 4 things raters look for and flagging mass-produced AI text as little to no effort:
- effort
- originality
- talent or skill
- accuracy
- Gary Illyes said at Search Central Live Barcelona that scaled content is becoming more of a problem than link spam, and fake authors are now named as a form of deception.
- Google has shipped 4 spam updates in 2026 (March, June, August, September) versus just one in all of 2025, with shrinking gaps between them.
Rethinking how SEO and GEO work gets budgeted
Source: Search Engine Journal
- A GEO proposal often wins funding over an identical SEO proposal because novelty is rewarded over economic value, even when the underlying technical work is the same.
- Google's guidance says AI features need the same fundamentals (accessible pages, technical requirements, useful content) rather than a separate set of optimizations, so much GEO work already sits inside SEO responsibilities.
- Classify investments by economic purpose, not department or acronym:
- commercial acquisition that generates revenue
- revenue protection like migration redirect planning
- shared infrastructure that cuts operational cost
- AI discovery experiments with defined learning objectives
- Revenue protection needs a different business case than growth. A hypothetical 10% organic revenue decline over 3 months on $10 million would represent $250,000 in exposure, justifying migration safeguards that produce no new traffic.
- Factor in opportunity cost. A valuable project still may not deserve funding if the same resources could earn more elsewhere.
Google adds WhatsApp buttons to local panels
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google is showing WhatsApp buttons in local panel results, alongside or in place of call, directions, website, and share actions, letting searchers chat with a business over WhatsApp.
- The change appears widely replicable, suggesting a full rollout, and follows Google earlier asking businesses to add WhatsApp numbers to their Business Profile and adding them automatically for some.
