Nano Banana 2.1 Rolls Out in Google AI Mode
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google released Nano Banana 2.1, its latest image generation and editing model, and it is already live inside AI Mode in Search.
- Google says the model outperforms previous versions across the board, with notable gains in visual design, mask-based editing, and subject consistency.
- Users access it by opening the Google app and tapping the banana icon under the Search box. AI Overviews do not appear to use version 2.1 yet.
Search Console Emails Site Owners Preferred Source Counts
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google Search Console is emailing site owners the number of users who selected their domain as a preferred source, the first time these counts have been shared.
- Preferred sources lets Search users choose publications they want to see more, which can surface content more often in Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode.
- The email nudges owners to install a 2-line JavaScript button and includes a survey on how Google should build preferred sources reporting. There is no in-GSC report yet.
OpenAI Tests Visual Ads in ChatGPT Image Generation
Source: Search Engine Journal
- OpenAI will begin testing a visual ad format that first appears during image generation later this month with an initial group of U.S. advertisers, extending beyond ads currently shown below responses.
- ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion people weekly. OpenAI says visual ads will be clearly labeled, separate from the image being created, and will not influence ChatGPT's responses.
- OpenAI expanded measurement with Hightouch, Tealium, and LiveRamp conversion integrations, attribution partners including AppsFlyer and Triple Whale, and geo-based incrementality tests with Haus, Measured, and WorkMagic.
- Early partner results cited include WeightWatchers' attributed CPA 15.3% lower than its blended paid search benchmark and 93% of Portland Leather ChatGPT Ads visitors being new. OpenAI also added Negative Phrases and brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science.
Technical SEO
Search Console Performance Report Adds Multi-Country Filter
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Google updated Search Console Performance report filters so operators can view combined Google Search traffic across more than one country at once.
- Previously, multiple devices, search types, countries, or search appearances required a comparison limited to 2 items. The help page still illustrated that 2-item rule on announcement day.
- Google's post says the update affects both devices and countries but did not specify the device filter changes, and did not confirm whether all properties get it simultaneously.
Google Explains "Couldn't Fetch" Sitemap Errors
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Martin Splitt and John Mueller said a sitemap can be valid, publicly accessible, and linked from robots.txt while Search Console still reports "couldn't fetch."
- Mueller gave 3 reasons for the error:
- Server host load issues or exhausted crawl capacity preventing Googlebot from accessing the file
- Low crawl demand, where Google decides it has enough and skips the sitemap
- Perceived low site quality reducing how much Google crawls and indexes
- Mueller said if site quality improves over time, Google will go back and use the sitemap. The underlying issue is that the error message does not match the actual cause, leaving users confused.
Google Updates Crawl Rate Reduction Documentation
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google restructured the emergency crawl rate reduction section of its "Reduce the Google crawl rate" documentation and added details on the Retry-After HTTP header.
- When returning a 503 or 429 status code, site owners can include a Retry-After header to tell Google's crawlers when to retry, using either a delay in seconds or an absolute UTC date and time.
- The underlying throttling mechanism has not changed. Google already treated 500, 503, and 429 responses as signals to reduce crawling, and Retry-After is now an explicit additional signal.
Search Console Clarifies AI Control Child Property Overrides
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google updated the Search generative AI control help document to note that top-level domain property owners will see a notification when a child property overrides the parent setting.
- These generative AI controls are now globally available in Search Console.
Using AI to Assist SEO Work, Not Replace the Practitioner
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Keep deterministic checks for anything verifiable (404 status, canonical presence, robots.txt rules, server-versus-rendered DOM link changes) rather than asking an LLM to judge them.
- Use language models to reduce friction, turning raw JSON or spreadsheet output into concise explanations, change summaries, or Jira ticket-ready descriptions, not to make the final decision.
- Testing Chrome's on-device Gemini Nano, the 4-bit model described wording changes reasonably but was unreliable at combining structured facts into a nuanced SEO judgement, confusing inputs with outputs and inventing rationale.
- Keeping a human in the loop exposes model failures from noisy evidence, ambiguous terminology, and weak deterministic logic, and keeps the practitioner close enough to the problem to answer follow-up questions.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Google Revises Helpful Content Guidelines to Emphasize Main Content
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Google substantially updated its "Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content" documentation, adding a new section on avoiding deceptive authorship and new language emphasizing good main content.
- Google uses these guidelines to build training sets evaluated by human Quality Raters, which its machine learning systems then learn to predict, so aligning with the document aligns with what ranking systems reward.
- Marie Haynes predicts a significant core update is coming soon, noting Google's new Gemini 4 Argon foundation model and that model capability jumps often coincide with ranking system changes.
September 2026 Spam Update Enters Likely Final Phase
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- The September 2026 spam update appears to be in its final phase, with a third volatility spike running October 4-6 after waves around September 25-27 and September 30.
- Google said this update runs roughly 2 weeks versus the typical 2-day rollout, producing multiple impact cycles across different days.
- Site owners report plummeting Search and Discover traffic, mismatched foreign readers, and one news publisher citing earnings down 80%.

Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google expanded Search profiles eligibility to creators and publishers in India and Canada starting today, with Brazil rolling out soon.
- A Search profile is a shareable, customizable page combining social accounts, websites, posts, and links, helping users discover creators via Google Search and Discover.
