Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Audit of 50 sites finds AI can find content but rarely understand it
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • An audit of 50 major sites across retail, SaaS, travel, publishing, and finance (captured June 12, 2026) scored a 3-layer AI readiness framework:
    • Retrievability (can AI fetch and parse content), averaging 74.4%
    • Attribution and Meaning (can AI tell what pages are about and who owns them), averaging 38.5%
    • Agent Transaction and Discovery (can AI agents transact), averaging 2.1%
  • Sites implemented just over half of established protocols on average (mean 56.6%, median 58.3%), with Airbnb highest at 79.2% and Amazon lowest at 29.2% by design.
  • JSON-LD structured data appeared on 70% of homepages, but only 5 of 50 sites implemented Cloudflare's Content Signals Policy for granular crawler permissions.
  • Nearly two-thirds leave which AI bots can access which content to chance, and Layer 3 protocols like MCP, Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, and OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol are the area to watch for first-mover advantage.

Schema makes trust verifiable for AI citations, not automatic
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Schema markup won't force AI systems to cite you, but it helps Google, Bing, and answer engines verify who you are and decide whether to feature you.
  • 4 surfaces must say the same thing or complex markup can undermine credibility:
    • The visible webpage
    • The schema
    • The platform of record (Google Business Profile or Merchant Center feed)
    • Third-party corroboration like reviews, directories, and publications
  • For commerce, match the Merchant Center feed field by field, and avoid flipping schema to OutOfStock the moment inventory hits zero since it can cost hard-won rankings.
  • A client's author-marked-up post on lettuce recalls was cited at the top of an AI Overview alongside the FDA and CDC, ranked second organically, and pulled ~1,300 clicks during a news cycle.
  • Build and validate one page as a template before scaling, since scaling first just multiplies the same error across thousands of pages.

How original research earned 1,000+ links and AI citations
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • PureLinq CEO Kevin Rowe rebuilt link building around original research, with one client campaign earning more than 1,000 citations including The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Axios, Fox Business, and Reuters.
  • One research asset can earn links, brand mentions, AI citations, and social distribution at once, but AI slop and wrong data will get you dropped by journalists.
  • The first month of a rebuilt B2B research hub produced exactly one link before placements climbed month over month, and journalists eventually emailed asking when the next dataset would be ready.
  • Studies with credentialed expert bylines rank fastest, with one plant-science professor's study holding position one and cited as the primary data point in AI Overviews.
  • ChatGPT clicks convert at a higher rate than average and are the largest measurable AI direct-click source Rowe's team tracks, though still far behind Google search with AI Overviews.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

Google Search Console generative AI reports and controls now global
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • As of August 31, 2026, Google finished rolling out the Search Console generative AI performance reports and AI feature controls to all sites worldwide, following a staged rollout that began the first week of June.
  • The report appears as an expandable tab under the main performance report and includes:
    • Impressions of URLs in generative AI features in Search and Discover
    • Pages that appeared within AI features
    • Countries and devices breakdowns
    • Dates with hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly granularity
  • The report carries no click data and no query data.
  • A globally rolled out toggle lets site owners opt content out of appearing in or around AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, either as links or for grounding.

Technical SEO

10 technical SEO audit mistakes and how to fix them
Source: Search Engine Land

  • Crawl with JavaScript rendering enabled and store both original and rendered HTML, since most AI crawlers don't execute JavaScript and a page can rank in Google yet be invisible to AI answer systems.
  • Sample URLs by template rather than at random, because most reportable issues are template issues and a developer can scope a template fix in about a minute.
  • Confirm any finding in at least 2 sources (Search Console's Page indexing report, server logs, Crawl Stats) and validate tool classifications by hand before handing work to developers.
  • Document root causes instead of symptoms, and prioritize by business impact rather than a tool's severity column.
  • Write recommendations developers can act on: affected URLs or templates, root cause, expected outcome, and acceptance criteria, while specifying the outcome rather than prescribing the implementation.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Anthropic adds watermarks to Claude outputs under the EU AI Act
Source: Search Engine Land

  • On August 11 Anthropic began adding machine-readable watermarks to Claude's outputs, a direct response to Article 50(2) of the EU AI Act requiring synthetic content to be detectable.
  • The method is statistical (generative) watermarking based on the SynthID-Text approach, which biases word sampling with a secret key rather than inserting hidden characters, and Anthropic says it has no practical effect on output quality.
  • The watermark signals that text was processed by Claude, not that Claude authored it, so light editing, rewriting, or translation still carry the mark, and a detection is likely to read as a negative signal.
  • Anthropic applied the watermark worldwide at launch, citing a "lack of a durable way to scope the feature by region," even though the law only applies in the EU.
  • Most major providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral, Cohere) signed the EU Voluntary Code of Practice on transparency, while xAI did not.

September 2026 Google webmaster report
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • The August 2026 spam update ran August 18-21, with unconfirmed volatility both before and after, and Google amended its site reputation abuse policy to not apply manual actions in the EEA.
  • Google began pushing AI Mode into AI Overviews and dropping the "Show more" button, added link carousel cards for developing stories, and confirmed AI Mode is partially powered by Gemini 3.7 Flash.
  • Google is rolling out google.com/goto tracking parameters on search result URLs to protect results from third-party tools like SerpApi, which it is still fighting in court.
  • On technical SEO, Google fixed favicon and crawl stats bugs, said Reddit gets no special ranking preference, and said there is nothing special to do for generative AI responses in Search.
  • Google saw major AI leadership changes this month, including Jeff Dean's departure and a change involving Demis Hassabis.
