Mueller says markdown files show no AI search benefit
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Google's John Mueller reported that on his test sites the only crawlers requesting markdown files were SEO tools, not major AI bots, and advised logging the accept header to check demand before generating markdown at scale.
  • There is no evidence that serving markdown versions of pages improves AI citations or visibility, since all AI systems already crawl and index HTML, a problem solved for over 30 years.
  • Content built just for LLMs risks the same fate as keyword meta tags, which failed because owners stuffed them. AI companies want the content users actually see.
  • Cloudflare's Markdown for Agents converts HTML to markdown on request, but its claim of heavy LLM demand for markdown is overstated. Markdown remains genuinely useful for agent instructions like OpenAI Codex's AGENTS.md and Anthropic Claude.

Restructuring marketing teams and budgets for AI search visibility
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Page-one rankings do not guarantee AI citations. In tests of clients' 20 highest-intent buyer queries, one Series B client with 14 page-one keywords appeared in only 4 of 20 assistant answers.
  • 3 role shifts are recommended: the SEO lead becomes the AI search lead owning brand entity across the site, LinkedIn, G2, Crunchbase and Reddit. The content team trades volume for original data and named outcomes. Digital PR moves to the performance budget with citation targets.
  • One client's $60,000 monthly budget shifted over a quarter, cutting paid search from $30,000 to $24,000 and adding a $10,000 AI search program plus $6,000 in tools including an AI visibility tracker. Move 15-20% of budget in the first quarter, then let evidence move the rest.
  • Run a 90-day sequence: weeks 1-4 baseline the 20 queries across 4 assistants and fix entity fragmentation, weeks 5-8 run one pod on a single product line, weeks 9-12 compare citation rate and referral traffic before reorganizing.
  • Avoid 3 budget wasters: hiring a GEO specialist before running a baseline, cutting classic SEO to zero, and running AI search as an unowned side project with no line item.

Prompt mapping: organizing AI search queries by funnel stage
Source: Search Engine Land

  • Prompt mapping identifies the questions your audience asks AI platforms and organizes them by topic, intent, persona, and buyer journey stage, extending keyword mapping for AI search.
  • An aggregate AI visibility score hides where a brand shows up. Breaking a 40% appearance rate down by stage might reveal 70% on branded and comparison prompts but only 10% on problem discovery and solution research.
  • Build a small deliberate tracking set rather than thousands of prompts: define your real buying stages, pull questions from sales calls, support tickets, reviews and Reddit, turn keyword themes into natural-language prompts, add customer context like industry and company size, and tag each prompt by stage and topic.
  • Run the same prompts consistently over time since AI answers vary between responses, and use where the brand drops out to pinpoint content gaps by funnel stage.

Building Reddit authority as part of an AI visibility system
Source: Search Engine Land

  • A 5-step framework builds Reddit authority: define your territory of authority as a specific question, establish a baseline across Google visibility, AI visibility, community perception and owned content, connect Reddit with SEO and content, focus on the right communities, and engage natively while monitoring the full journey.
  • Kumon's application produced 1,400 members in r/KumonBrasil, over 2,000 user responses, over 100,000 views on one piece of content with 95% approval, and over 400,000 combined profile views in 5 months.
  • Kumon's visibility across 12 monitored ChatGPT prompts rose from 5% in month one to 18.13% in month 5, with a Reddit post appearing in a ChatGPT answer about opinions of the brand.
  • AI visibility came from combining community participation, owned content, SEO, technical optimization and continuous monitoring, not from posting on Reddit as a citation hack. (Disclosure: the author works for NP Digital Brazil, which ran the case study.)

Profound finds Claude and Claude Code answer differently
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Profound tested 1,724 prompts on both products July 13-23, generating 24,135 responses with web search enabled. Claude Code used web search in 13% of responses versus 93% for Claude, and the brands mentioned overlapped by only ~20% on average.
  • Claude Code mentioned slightly more brands per response (6.6 versus 5.2), gave shorter, more structured answers (322 versus 459 words), and included a table in over half its responses versus 11% for Claude.
  • On page visits, ~75% of Claude Code's went to documentation, informational and pricing pages while only 5% of Claude's did. 60% of Claude's visits hit robots.txt, sitemaps and homepages versus 4% for Claude Code.
  • For pages Claude Code reads, state clear technical facts like "Supports Python 3.10-3.13, Node.js 20+, and Go 1.22+" and lead with the answer under question-shaped headings. Measure Claude Code separately from Claude where customers use it.

Google rolls out Search Console AI performance reports and opt-out control worldwide
Sources: Search Engine Land · Search Engine Journal

  • Google completed the global rollout of its generative AI performance reports and Search generative AI control, noting "As of August 31, 2026, we've rolled out this control to all websites worldwide," though some help pages still say access is in progress.
  • The AI performance report shows impressions from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI in Discover, broken down by page, country, device, and date, but includes no click data.
  • A property-level opt-out toggle lets owners exclude their site from those 3 AI surfaces. Opting out forfeits all traffic and impressions from AI features but is not used as a ranking signal in standard Search, and it does not affect AI training (governed separately by Google-Extended).
  • The rollout traces to a June 3 UK CMA conduct requirement that Google let sites opt out without search penalty. The CMA has given Google until March 2027 to add page-level controls and expects click-through data plus compliance reporting every 6 months in the first year.

EU designates ChatGPT a very large online search engine under the DSA
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • The European Commission named ChatGPT the first AI chatbot classified as a very large online search engine under the Digital Services Act, alongside very large online platform designations for Reddit and Roblox.
  • OpenAI's own disclosure put ChatGPT search at ~159.1 million average monthly active EU recipients over the 6 months ending March 31, 2026, more than 3 times the 45 million threshold. Reddit reported no more than 57.2 million and Roblox ~46.6 million.
  • The 3 services have 4 months to meet extra DSA rules: systemic-risk assessments, annual independent audits, data sharing with regulators and vetted researchers, a non-profiling recommender option, and a public ad archive.
  • The Commission classified ChatGPT as a hybrid service that counts as a search engine because it answers prompts by searching the web. Violations can draw fines up to 6% of global annual revenue.

Microsoft now requires login for Copilot but not Bing's Copilot Search
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Microsoft confirmed it now requires all users to sign in before using Copilot at copilot.microsoft.com, including via the Copilot button on Bing's home page.
  • Copilot Search answers shown within Bing Search still do not require sign-in, per Microsoft's Michael Schechter and Krishna Madhavan.

Universal Commerce Protocol adds grocery features and breaking schema changes
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • The UCP project released its fourth spec update, its first since April, adding grocery features including store location tools, a standardized store hours format, and ordering by weight, plus laying groundwork for food and lodging commerce.
  • Breaking changes require schema updates: fulfillment schemas moved to a new structure, buyer consent now lives in a flexible map instead of fixed fields, and profile signing keys are consolidated into a single JWK Set. Versions are now labeled by date instead of number.
  • Payments gained vendor-neutral 3D Secure 2 authentication, deposits and installment schedules, and split payments, with the spec reorganized into Shopping, Payment, and Common sections.
  • Governance expanded with a Food Technical Council (Block, DoorDash, Google, Toast, Uber Eats) and a Lodging Technical Council (Amadeus, Booking.com, Expedia, Google, Hilton, Marriott, Trip.com), while retail UCP checkout expands to Canada and Australia with the UK planned.

Rank Math pauses AI Support Agent over WordPress credential consent
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Rank Math temporarily paused its AI Support Agent after failing to clearly disclose that it generated WordPress Application Password credentials granting site access, acknowledging its permission and consent process was not explicit.
  • The agent operated read-only to answer support questions and was the first step in a larger agentic AI plan for agents that can take actions on a site with granted permissions.
  • Rank Math named 4 safeguards: credentials were encrypted, not stored on its side, inherited the current user's permissions, and were read-only. The feature will return after the access-request flow is redesigned to ask permission in plain language beforehand.

Mueller says Google won't penalize old links to sites that turned shady
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • John Mueller said Google will not penalize a site for old outbound links to a domain that later changed ownership and now hosts shady content, replying "no" and adding "the web is full of turmoil."
  • Google is good at ignoring link cruft, old spammy or irrelevant links accrued over the years, consistent with its stance since 2016 that it ignores rather than demotes links.
  • Mueller noted a different problem exists if a whole site's value has become obsolete, versus a handful of broken outbound links.

Local search journeys shift inside Google Maps as calls and clicks fall
Source: Search Engine Land

  • After a revised baseline, US website clicks and calls fell 15.8% year over year in Q1 and are down 11.9% and 12.5% in Q2, while direction requests rose 31.3% then 21.1%, suggesting customers complete the journey inside Google Maps rather than on a results page.
  • Desktop Maps impressions reversed from -17.9% in Q1 to +3.2% in Q2 in the US, with mobile Maps up 30.4% and desktop search up 13.9%, indicating the shift is no longer mobile only.
  • Sterling Sky and Jepto's analysis of 179 Google Business Profiles found AI local packs often show 2 businesses instead of 3, frequently without a click-to-call button, and surface only 32% as many unique businesses as the traditional Map Pack.
  • SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found AI platforms recommend far fewer locations than Google's 3-pack: 1.2% on ChatGPT, 7.4% on Perplexity, and 35.9% on Google, with profile accuracy averaging 68% on ChatGPT and Perplexity versus 100% on Gemini.
  • Give direction requests equal weight to call volume in reporting, and keep Google Business Profile data complete and accurate. Reviews increasingly feed the AI layer, with Google prompting structured tags like atmosphere, price, and cleanliness.

Google confirms spam team is still well-resourced after August 2026 spam update
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Rajan Patel, VP of Engineering for Google Search, confirmed on X that the spam team remains well-resourced and continues writing new algorithms, responding "Yes it is" to concerns that staffing had shifted toward Gemini.
  • SE Ranking's Mordy Oberstein reported the August 2026 spam update drove an 82% increase in URLs kicked out of the top 100, hitting harder than most spam updates.
  • Glenn Gabe documented large drops on heavily programmatic sites, including one scaled to 1.3 million URLs and another with close to 250,000 URLs indexed.
