Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

How to Measure AI Search Visibility Without Chasing Vanity Metrics
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • The piece argues prompt tracking copies rank tracking into AI search but rests on made-up prompt lists disconnected from real user behavior, while AI query fan-out inflates Search Console impressions without matching human clicks.
  • Lily Ray pulled AI Overview answers for 100 business software "best of" queries and found that when a brand's own self-promotional listicle was cited, the brand was left out of the actual recommendation 69% of the time (224 of 323 listicles).
  • Jeff Oxford's Visibility Labs tested 20,000 ChatGPT responses and found product recommendations changed 80.2% once search was switched on, with only a 0.4 correlation between being cited and being recommended; Kevin Indig found 91% of 3.7 million cited URLs appear in only one engine.
  • Rand Fishkin says you would need to ask Claude or ChatGPT about 1,500 times to get two identical brand lists, so AI visibility must be measured like a poll (plus or minus 5%) rather than a single rank check.
  • Wil Reynolds recommends tracking answer composition over time (words and brands per model per prompt) and tying visibility to actual actions, noting ChatGPT doubled answer length last November, which can inflate raw visibility.

Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Barry Schwartz reports third-party tracking tools showed a volatility blip on Saturday July 18, with Sunday July 19 looking even more heated, and the week overall running hotter than the July 11 movement.
  • Some in the SEO community say the July 11 changes are now reversing, while others report large swings, including one site up 400% in traffic without any changes and others still down.
  • The last confirmed updates were the June 2026 spam update (June 14 to 26) and the May 2026 core update (May 21 to June 2); this weekend's movement remains unconfirmed by Google.
