Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Building an AI content factory without erasing local markets
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • AI search retrieves passages rather than selecting pages, so near-identical localized pages get folded to a canonical version and the strongest instance (usually the US or main English site) wins the answer.
  • High translation memory leverage makes markets look alike to retrieval systems, which discard reuse, so a German buyer may get US availability or a Japanese patient an unapproved product.
  • Build a fact registry as the single source of truth before writing, recording owner, applicable markets, evidence, approval status and review date, then split content into global-invariant and market-variable segments.
  • Write for passages so each survives losing its URL:
    • Put the market inside the sentence ("In Germany, the system is available through...")
    • Date every figure ("As of September 2026")
    • Keep claims, qualifiers and regulatory context in the same paragraph
    • Use question-shaped headings and keep entity names identical across languages
  • Track what AI assistants actually say per market with a fixed set of local-language priority prompts run on a regular schedule, watching market leakage most closely.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

OpenAI says ChatGPT is at ~20% of Google's search volume
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry said ChatGPT gets roughly one-fifth as many search-like queries as Google, with OpenAI counting a search each time a question sends ChatGPT to the web.
  • Fry did not say which Google figure the comparison uses, over what period, or which regions, leaving the ~20% ratio hard to verify.
  • Outside data tells a different story. Ahrefs in February estimated ChatGPT at ~12% of Google's search volume, and its referral tracker across 118,671 sites showed Google at 24.74% of traffic versus ChatGPT at 0.36%.
  • Big Technology reported ChatGPT weekly active users grew 20% in 2 months, from 1 billion to 1.2 billion.
  • When reporting ChatGPT in a channel plan, separate query volume from referral traffic, since the 2 metrics measure very different things.

Google's Q3 earnings call: Search and AI merging into one product
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Pichai and Schindler described AI Overviews, AI Mode and traditional Search as one unified product, with agentic search as the next frontier.
  • Alphabet revenue rose 25% year over year and Cloud rose 103%, but Search advertising grew 12% versus the 15% Wall Street expected, partly because AI Mode shows fewer ads today.
  • Google said it will prioritize AI Mode quality first and monetize later, after expanding AI Mode ads to more countries including Australia and Canada.
  • Google launched a Connected Apps Platform letting users invoke a site's functionality (for example @Peloton) via MCP inside Gemini and Search.
  • Pichai said the Gemini app hit 1 billion users and expects continued acceleration over the next 12 months from recursive self-improvement.

Google tests removing the AI Mode button from the search bar
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Len Raleigh spotted Google dropping the AI Mode button in incognito and Chrome, while it remained on other machines and sessions, indicating a limited test.
  • Barry Schwartz could not replicate it and expects Google is running it on a small subset of searchers to compare performance against the button being present.
  • Google originally added the AI Mode button to the search bar in May 2025.

Technical SEO

Mueller: blocking an age-verification popup with robots.txt is fine
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • John Mueller confirmed site owners can use robots.txt to stop Googlebot from rendering an age-verification popup even though human visitors are required to see it.
  • He outlined 2 methods:
    • Block crawling on the external domain that serves the popup, the way many ad services work
    • Block the specific JavaScript file that loads the popup on your own site when you can't influence the external robots.txt
  • He cautioned against blocking a single JS file that does many things, and said the page must still load correctly when Googlebot cannot fetch the blocked resources.

Google rewrites "Crawled - currently not indexed" documentation
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google updated its page indexing help docs to say it doesn't index all pages, that "Crawled - currently not indexed" is common, and that it doesn't necessarily indicate a problem needing action.
  • The new text points owners to the URL Inspection tool for important pages and to the report-an-indexing-issue form only after fully diagnosing a suspected site-wide bug.
  • The revision notably drops any mention of quality issues, which Google has repeatedly cited as a cause of this status.

Search Console shows a weird click spike for some sites
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google Search Console's performance report showed large click spikes (sometimes 10x normal) around Oct. 31 for some sites, with impressions staying flat and no matching rise in actual site traffic.
  • Glenn Gabe, Joy Hawkins and Dan Nutter all reported it hitting some properties but not others, with Hawkins and Gabe suspecting bot or rogue AI agent traffic.
  • The spike dropped back to normal the next day. Google had not confirmed a cause as of reporting.

Mueller: only your home page indexed can signal a quality issue
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • John Mueller said that a site where only the home page stays indexed after previously being fully indexed often points to a general quality issue with the overall site.
  • Responding to a case involving a hacked and cleaned-up site stuck in limbo, he suggested the cause may be unrelated to the hack unless the hack persisted for many months.
  • He noted timing can mask the real cause when a hack and a core update land together, and he has flagged similar home-page-only cases as quality issues before.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Rank trackers find Google results matching only one word of a query
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • SE Ranking, analyzing 10,000 US desktop keywords, found unrelated listings that matched only one word of the query in 84% of flagged cases, with 96.5% starting at position 9 or lower.
  • Nozzle dated the onset to page 2 dropping words on Sept. 16 and page 1 on Sept. 20, and found the full query still in the page title on 99.8% of affected pages with no "Showing results for" notice.
  • SE Ranking's share of keywords with any unrelated listing jumped from 0.09% on Sept. 16 to 57.3% on Sept. 17 and 67.2% by Sept. 24. Nozzle measured lost terms on ~13.9% of searches judged on both pages, peaking at ~39.9% on Sept. 28.
  • A site can look missing in a tracker without its real rank changing, so check late-September and October drops at position 9 or lower and on page 2 first, then compare Search Console impressions and clicks for the same query.

Google will turn off Search and Gemini by default for K-12 students
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

  • Google will set Search, Gemini, Gemini Notebook and Gemini in Classroom to off by default for K-12 student accounts until school administrators turn them on, citing requests from schools, teachers and policymakers.
  • Google clarified the move gives schools more choice, letting them enable one, 2 or all services individually.
  • Google is adding Guided Learning to Search, AI Mode and AI Overviews for student accounts, walking students step by step through problems instead of giving direct answers, starting with a US school pilot later this month.
