SEO Recap covering October 23, 2026: Rank tracker SERP poisoning and Universal Cart going live
Daily summary of what matters in SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI search generated with Claude Code (beware of hallucinations)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
GEO Is a Distraction, Google and Agentic Search Are Where the ROI Is
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Across 12 months of GA4 data from 100 sites and over 145 million sessions, ChatGPT drove just 0.62% of Google organic's session volume, rising to 0.73% with all LLMs included.
- ChatGPT visitors converted at 13.8% versus 3.02% for Google organic (more than 4.5x), but Google still drove 96.5% of total conversions, and Google organic produced 27x more conversions than all LLMs combined.
- ChatGPT's exponential referral growth ended in August 2025 around the GPT-5 release, and it has sent fewer visitors to sites since.
- 45 of the 100 sampled sites tracked no key events at all. Define a conversion or key event and track it rather than leaning on rank tracking or raw citations.
- Prepare for agentic search instead of chasing LLM mentions:
- Google's Universal Cart, which aggregates products into one Google Wallet checkout
- the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) governed by Google, Shopify, and Stripe, with /.well-known/ucp endpoints
- WebMCP, which exposes site functions to AI agents via markup and APIs
- Gemini-powered "intelligent eyewear" on Android XR shipping this fall
AI in Search / AI Overviews
AI Overviews Citation Cards Now Show AI-Generated Summaries
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google is testing or rolling out AI-generated summary snippets inside the citation cards shown alongside AI Overviews, spotted by Brodie Clark.
- The summary text does not match the source page verbatim. It is generated from what Google judges most relevant to the query.
- The behavior appears on some test queries but not all, so the rollout looks partial.
Technical SEO
Rank Trackers Clean Up After Google SERP "Poisoning"
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Nozzle found 8.7% of its first pages were "poisoned" between September 13 and October 21 (less than 50% of a keyword's normal page 1 sites appearing), up from 0.17% from August 20-September 9, and attributes it to Google's response to AI scraping.
- Ahrefs says it is cleaning up past affected results and estimates 5-20% of search results were affected over recent weeks depending on the data provider. SEOmonitor estimates ~8% of daily Google results come back incomplete or incorrect.
- Vendors describe different safeguards:
- AccuRanker re-fetches via a new browser session and compares against 2 of the previous 3 days, with a "sandwich check" that flagged 30.2% of desktop keyword-days on September 25 versus 0.58% on October 17
- SEOmonitor may keep showing a prior rank for up to 2 daily updates on unusually large drops, and switched to content checks on October 13
- SerpApi deployed an October 14 update to reduce poisoned API results
- No vendor cites a statement from Google or independent testing of how well its checks work. Compare stored September/October data before resending client reports and use Search Console as corroborating evidence on disputed drops.
Google Images and Discover Don't Support JPEG XL
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- John Mueller confirmed on Bluesky that JPEG XL (.jxl) is currently not supported for display in Google Images or as Discover previews.
- Supported formats for images in the img src attribute are BMP, GIF, JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF, and the filename extension should match the file type.
- JPEG XL offers up to 50% better compression than traditional JPEG and lossless recompression of legacy JPEGs at ~20% smaller, but Glenn Gabe notes some .jxl files still turn up in a filetype query on Google Images.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Google Universal Cart Goes Live in US Search
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google's Universal Cart, demoed at I/O in May, is now rolling out in the US across Google Search, Shopping, and Gemini ahead of the holiday season.
- A cart icon appears at the top right of results, with "Add to cart" buttons on product listings. Buyers select options and sizes, then confirm, and items land in a single cart with a "My orders" tab.
- It uses Google Pay for stored payment details and awards credit-card points on purchases.
The Junior Hiring Gap Your 2027 Marketing Budget Should Name
Source: Search Engine Journal
- A Stanford Digital Economy Lab working paper using ADP payroll data found employment of workers aged 22-25 in AI-exposed occupations sits 19% below where it would be versus less-exposed peers, driven by reduced hiring rather than layoffs.
- Experienced workers show no comparable gap, with every older group growing, up to 11% for workers aged 35-40. The effect shrinks when controlling for education (from about -0.18 to -0.09). The paper studies occupations broadly and reports no SEO or marketing figures.
- Gartner data shows labor rising from a mean 21.9% to 24.5% of marketing budgets even as 43% of CMOs expected to cut labor spending, with the extra share likely flowing to experienced staff while entry-level seats go unfilled.
- Treat the 2027 entry-level role as its own budget line in Kevin Indig's "learning bucket" with a named owner, fixed weekly hours, and a decision date, built around community work, digital PR, and AI citation tracking that are hard to hand to a model.
- Track 3 measurement layers together:
- exposure (AI citations, mentions, share of voice)
- behavior (branded search, direct visits)
- business outcomes (pipeline)
