ChatGPT referral drop in GA4 traced to a tracking bug
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • Graphite found ChatGPT-attributed GA4 sessions fell 22-57% starting Oct 9, roughly 45% below baseline, while LLM Pulse measured ~46% fewer ChatGPT sessions Oct 9-11 with total site traffic holding steady.
  • The cause: after the GPT-6 rollout, ChatGPT began opening inline answer links without the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag or a referrer, so those visits land in GA4's Direct channel.
  • Adobe's Cedric Huesler found ChatGPT visits to ~500 pages fell ~31,000 a day while Direct rose ~26,000 a day, and the new Direct visitors behaved like ChatGPT visitors.
  • Supporting measurements:
    • Profound: share of cited answers carrying a tagged link fell from ~98% on Oct 8 to 66% by Oct 14, as its Intelligent UI format jumped from 2% to ~35% of answers.
    • Peec AI's Tomek Rudzki: ChatGPT placed a direct URL in 42% of responses versus 8-10% before, with 54% pointing to homepages.
  • OpenAI confirmed the bug to Huesler on Oct 14 and a fix began rolling out Oct 15. Annotate Oct 8-15 in reporting and count the UTM tag rather than referrers.

AI in Search / AI Overviews

Google reworks links and carousels in AI Mode and AI Overviews
Sources: Search Engine Journal · Search Engine Roundtable · Google Search Product News

  • Google announced 5 changes to links in AI Mode and AI Overviews:
    • More inline links, placed higher in responses more often.
    • A new top section surfacing 1-2 official-site links for narrow tasks, with context on why each is useful.
    • Timely-article carousels expanding to more locations and languages.
    • Related-article links at the end of responses getting image thumbnails and a more clickable design.
  • Google began testing clickable creator and publisher names on AI Mode video results that link to Search profiles, which are Google-hosted pages reached first rather than the source site.
  • Google said Preferred Sources usage has grown more than 7x since the start of the year, but gave no user count or methodology.
  • Because Search Console assigns every link in an AI Overview the overview's single position, moving an inline link higher does not change its reported position.
  • Barry Schwartz noted Google still withholds click data in its AI performance reports, with Google saying only that it will add metrics over time.

Organic Search & Algorithm Updates

Google's News AI licensing pilot passes 400 publications
Source: Google Search Product News

  • More than 400 publications worldwide now participate in Google's News AI pilot, which pays publishers for the delivery and use of enhanced content in AI features.
  • New partners include Axios, CNN, The Financial Times, and Forbes, plus local outlets such as Post and Courier, Texas Tribune, Oil City News, and Shaw Media.
  • The program powers features like in-depth article overviews on Google News publisher pages and customizable audio briefings, with attribution and direct links.

Google launches Universal Cart in US Search and Gemini
Sources: Search Engine Roundtable · Google Search Product News

  • Google launched Universal Cart in the US across Google Search and the Gemini app, powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol, ahead of the holiday season.
  • Shoppers can save products from multiple retailers in one cart, get price-drop and restock alerts, see auto-applied promo codes, and check out via Google Pay or transfer items to the merchant site.
  • The cart is built on the Shopping Graph's 60+ billion product listings and Google Wallet; launch merchants include Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair, and many Shopify merchants.

Forecast: the ranked SERP stops being Google's default by 2028-2030
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • The forecast puts the ranked results page losing its default-first-response status for most US queries between 2028 and 2030, with the UK and EU a year or more behind, leaving ranked links one click away rather than deleted.
  • Supporting data:
    • AI Overviews reached 43% of US searches by May 2026, up from 15% a year earlier (Similarweb).
    • AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users but accounted for only ~0.34% of Google searches from January-April 2026.
    • AI Mode drove outbound referrals on 1.6-2.5% of queries versus 17-19% for traditional search.
  • The trigger is ad economics: Google flips the default when answer-layer ad yield reaches rough parity with the ranked page, which is why it has not moved yet.
  • 3 regulatory processes (UK CMA conduct requirements, an EU investigation, and the US DOJ cross-appeal) slow and stagger the shift by market.

Prediction model flags an overdue Panda-style core update
Source: Search Engine Journal

  • A gradient-boosted prediction model puts a Google algorithm update at 96.8% in the next 30 days and 90.9% over 90 days (from Oct 13), with late October-mid November 2026 the prime window.
  • No broad core update has run since May 2026 (August and September were targeted spam updates), and Google typically runs 3-4 core updates a year.
  • Google's helpful-content guidance now names 4 things quality raters assess: effort, originality, talent or skill, and accuracy.
  • Mass-produced AI content without oversight and fake authors (AI-generated headshots, made-up names, false credentials) are cited as low-quality signals, and Gary Illyes said scaled content is becoming a bigger problem than link spam.
