SEO Recap covering October 9, 2026: AI Overviews surge on brand searches and Anthropic's source-seeding ban
Daily summary of what matters in SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI search generated with Claude Code (beware of hallucinations)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Anthropic bans using Claude to seed sources that AI answers draw from
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Anthropic's updated usage policy, effective November 12, prohibits using Claude to manipulate the sources search engines and AI systems draw answers from by seeding them with content that misrepresents its origin, authorship, or independence.
- The new "Do Not Engage in Deceptive Campaigns or Artificial Activity" section also bars fake personas, outlets, and reviews, networks of sites posing as unaffiliated sources, and building or selling tools for such campaigns.
- The rules tie to Anthropic's September threat report, which found ~70 fake local news sites linked to a France-based ad agency that used Claude to publish at least 8,913 articles across ~20 languages, each with 3-4 internal links to boost search authority.
- Anthropic enforces against Claude users by limiting or revoking access, paralleling Google's spam policy that treats manipulating generative AI responses in Search as spam.
- Before November 12, check whether any Claude-generated content you or an agency produce is published across networks of sites presented as independent, and compare your review and disclosure procedures against the new 11-item high-risk list.
AI in Search / AI Overviews
AI Overviews now appear on most brand-name searches, per Ahrefs and others
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Ahrefs tracked 100 global brand names in U.S. results weekly from July-September. AI Overviews appeared for 5 of 98 usable results on July 1 and 63 of 100 by September 30, with most of the jump at the start of September.
- In a broader analysis of 92.5 million branded-keyword crawls, Ahrefs found branded queries triggering AI Overviews rose from 61.3% in July to 73.3% in September, a 12-point increase versus 4.8 points for non-branded. On September 29 the figure hit 82.91%.
- Separate counts the same week used different samples: Chris Long scraped 93 of 100 enterprise brands showing AI Overviews, while DemandSphere's branded tracking peaked at 90.48% on September 27 before dropping to 82.06% on September 29.
- For the 63 September 30 AI Overviews, Ahrefs recorded an average on-page position of 1.49 (median one), with 48 in position one. Wikipedia, YouTube, and LinkedIn were the most cited outside domains, and only one verified competitor-owned site appeared across 57 source lists.
- Monitor your exact brand name on Google and the pages it cites, take dated screenshots, and use Search Console's branded queries filter and generative AI performance report, noting the latter has no query dimension to isolate brand-name searches.

Technical SEO
Google's Mueller and Splitt on when HTML sitemaps still help SEO
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Mueller said HTML sitemaps are not a replacement for XML sitemaps because they lack strict structure and cannot be submitted as a sitemap file, though crawlers can follow their links like any other link.
- HTML sitemaps still have value as user navigation. Mueller suggested organizing them around top-level category paths rather than listing every page, so an ecommerce site would list categories, not every product.
- Building HTML sitemaps that are genuinely useful to visitors can drive engagement signals and help Google discover pages, so the SEO value starts with users.
