Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
How to Map the Sources Shaping AI Answers in Your Industry
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Trendos' Gintare Rimolaityte says a brand can rank in Google without appearing in the sources an AI answer cites, so map citation sources by industry and engine rather than treating rankings as full AI visibility.
- In summer 2026 examples across consumer retail, IT services, and communication services, community and user-generated sources were prominent, but the remaining mix varied enough that a universal target list is a poor substitute for checking your own category.
- Source mix differs by engine across Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, ChatGPT, and Gemini, so keep engine-level results visible. Reddit's reduced prominence in ChatGPT did not mean it vanished elsewhere.
- Run a citation audit:
- Start with 10-20 questions customers ask while choosing a product or provider
- Run them in the relevant engines and record cited URLs by source type
- Inspect pages where competitors appear and you do not
- Prioritize by citation share rather than chasing thousands of editorial sites
Building Local Pages AI Systems Can Find and Trust
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Whitespark's Darren Shaw warns you cannot be surfaced in AI responses if the AI cannot access your site. Cloudflare often blocks AI crawlers by default, sometimes without the business knowing.
- Server-side rendering matters again because ChatGPT and similar tools do not render JavaScript or keep their own index. Deliver important content in the HTML response and verify what a non-rendering crawler sees.
- Orphaned or duplicated URLs with suffixes like "-old" or "v2" can feed AI stale phone numbers and addresses. Crawl the site, filter for those suffixes, and make sure none are indexable.
- Schema split the panel: Shaw sees it as unproven for rankings but useful for disambiguation, while Jeffery says do it but keep it synced so it does not go stale as a third business-data source.
- For content, name the business entity in key passages instead of "we" (semantic triples), state numbers explicitly on the page, and use query fan-out to build the FAQ list AI systems draw from.
AI in Search / AI Overviews
Study Finds Google AI Mode Cuts Publisher Clicks and Worsens User Experience
Source: Search Engine Journal
- A draft paper from University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern researchers, "AI in Search Reduces Publisher Referrals Without Improving User Experience," published August 2026, found AI Mode reduces clicks to websites and made users less satisfied with Google Search.
- The randomized field experiment enrolled 1,444 people, tracked 1,100 over 7 days via browser extension, and surveyed 956, randomizing them across 3 conditions:
- Forced regular search with AI Overviews hidden and AI Mode redirected
- Natural Google behavior
- Forced AI Mode
- Assignment to AI Mode increased the share of users searching on Bing, DuckDuckGo, or Yahoo, reduced search sessions per day, and lowered trust and perceived usefulness, hitting heavy Search users hardest.
- Removing AI Overviews increased clicks to external sites with no detectable decline in satisfaction, contradicting Google's claims that AI Mode sends more traffic to the open web.
- A caveat is that Google changed AI Overview HTML mid-study, breaking the extension's hiding logic. Only 51.1% of AI Overviews were successfully hidden overall.
Technical SEO
Job Sites Report Months-Long Silence on Google Indexing API Approvals
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Job board operators say requests to use Google's Indexing API beyond the default 200 testing quota go unanswered for months, with no approval, rejection, or request for more information.
- Nick LeRoy and Alexander Chukovski cite 100+ job boards as data points and hypothesize Google approved no submissions in 2026, though LeRoy is open that he cannot confirm the number is zero.
- Google's job posting guide still recommends the Indexing API over sitemaps because it prompts Googlebot to crawl sooner, while the quickstart says usage beyond testing needs additional approval based on document quality.
- Mueller said in May the API is "inundated by bloggers trying to act like legitimate sites," so Google is likely more cautious, without describing the review process.
- Operators report a publish request returns HTTP 200, then a getMetadata call for the same URL returns 404, which a Google Product Expert called a strong sign the project has not been approved.
International SEO for Publishers: Why ccTLDs Beat a Single Generic Domain
Source: Search Engine Journal
- A single generic TLD like theguardian.com only works with strong brand equity, large brand search volume across territories, and a single language.
- Translated articles are not duplicates, so Google recognizes the language and ranks them without hreflang tags. Set the HTML lang attribute anyway for other search engines.
- hreflang is unviable for news because Google indexes new articles fast but recrawls existing ones too slowly to see reciprocal tags, leaving hours of conflict that is an eternity in news.
- Separate country-code domains for every target country, with local desks, reporting, and infrastructure, are recommended as the best long-term strategy despite higher overhead.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Agentic Commerce Is Not Voice Shopping, But Payment Firms Aren't Proving It Works
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Agentic commerce differs structurally from voice shopping because the purchase can happen without the user present, which the FIDO Alliance treats as its own "Human Not Present" transaction class.
- Merchants can be reachable without building anything: Shopify turned on UCP version 2026-08-25 across storefronts on September 4 with no integration changes, and Mastercard and Visa offer compatibility paths for existing acceptance.
- Google's agentic checkout is live in Search and AI Mode with Wayfair, Chewy, Quince, and select Shopify merchants, but it is human-present because the user confirms the purchase and shipping.
- McKinsey projects $1 trillion in US retail orchestrated by agents by 2030 and Gartner predicts 90% of B2B purchases handled by agents by 2028, the same class of forecast as OC&C's $40 billion voice shopping miss.
- Most payment companies publish no version number, status, named live merchant, or liability terms, leaving merchants carrying risk under protocols their owners never evaluated.
Shopify CEO on AI "Slop Grenades" and the Cost of Reviewing AI Output
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke says AI's new failure mode is over-output, where staff generate work and hand it off unread, which the company calls "slop grenades."
- Lütke estimated up to ~50% of Shopify's pull requests are generated from chat conversations via an internal AI agent called River, roughly 17 months after he made AI use a baseline expectation.
- Freelance demand for fixing AI output is rising:
- Freelancer.com "correct AI" and "AI hallucination" listings grew 87% to 10,760 from August 2025 to June 2026
- Upwork AI remediation gigs rose 70% year over year
- Fiverr searches for "AI cleanup" grew over 20-fold from 2023 to 2026
- A BetterUp and Stanford Social Media Lab survey of over 1,000 US desk workers found ~40% hit "workslop" in the past month, each instance taking nearly 2 hours to resolve.
