SEO Recap covering September 8, 2026: Google's DMA search overhaul and Mueller on programmatic SEO
Daily summary of what matters in SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI search generated with Claude Code (beware of hallucinations)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
Common Crawl finds most llms.txt files come from plugins and templates
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Common Crawl analyzed over 500,000 llms.txt files and found 68% originated from a plugin or template, 22.56% had no links at all, and 49% had the full tested structure of an H1, summary blockquote and link sections.
- Wix generated 41% of files. All in One SEO never writes a summary but has a median of 138 links across 73,000 files, treating llms.txt like a sitemap, and GoDaddy's parked-domain files pass structural checks as sales pitches.
- Some sites treat llms.txt like robots.txt. Of 32 files that appeared to deny CCBot, none of the 31 assessable sites actually blocked it in robots.txt, and Common Crawl found 136,578 robots.txt files served at the llms.txt path (~10% of 200 responses).
- Only 4 genuine prompt injection cases turned up, all deliberately inserted to make a point, while 3,793 files showed milder guidance like "focus on these pages."
- A crawler restriction written in llms.txt does nothing on its own. CCBot honors robots.txt, so access rules belong there and any llms.txt line should match them.
AI in Search / AI Overviews
Google tests a thinner AI Overviews citation panel
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Google is testing a noticeably thinner design for the citations and link panel on the right side of AI Overviews, spotted by Khushal Bherwani and replicated by Search Engine Roundtable.
- The slimmer panel may be less noticeable to searchers, potentially reducing clicks to cited publisher sites.
Six months into ChatGPT Ads, advertisers still lack benchmarks
Source: Search Engine Journal
- OpenAI's ChatGPT Ads now offers self-service access in 52 countries but has published no performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries or campaign types, and provides no Auction Insights, impression share or competitive reporting.
- Published tests show wide variance: Hostinger spent nearly $70,000 and reported CPMs above $65 with CTR as the bigger concern, while a high-AOV ecommerce advertiser averaged a $4.41 CPC and estimated 3.3x-6.8x ROAS after $9,620 in spend.
- Synter's $9.89 average CPC ranged from $5.10 in the UK to $22.89 in New Zealand, and a B2B campaign's deanonymization found only 5 of 146 identified organizations matched the ideal customer profile.
- OpenAI's $3-5 figure is a recommended starting maximum CPC bid, not a platform average or benchmark, and Maximize results became the default bid strategy in August.
- Ads reach only Free and Go plan users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and under-18 accounts are excluded, so total ChatGPT user counts overstate the ad-eligible audience.
Technical SEO
Inside Google Maps: 72 Geostore ranking signals and the local search architecture
Source: Search Engine Land
- A recovered binary of Google's Geostore exposed 72 Oyster Rank signals (25 marked deprecated), 793 data source providers, 446 local search intent types, 50,998 Mapcore styles and 10,936 searchable declarations, cross-referenced with the 2024 leak.
- Oyster Rank signals include Google reviews, web query volume, listing impressions, direction requests, website clicks, chain membership, Wikipedia signals, prominence and popularity, but the recovered data shows signal names, not current weights.
- The 72 signals are not the Maps algorithm. A query still passes through query understanding, semantic matching, candidate generation, geography and quality, and reranking, plus a separate on-device scorer with 8 signals across 13 tiers.
- Local search has no fixed radius. Across 5,083 calls and 86,584 results, removing geographic weighting moved the median distance from 6.87 km to over 4,000 km while the non-geographic order stayed stable, showing geography changes which candidates are considered.
- Maps and web SEO connect through entities via the Knowledge Graph MID and a webref layer, so a store locator or location page becomes evidence about the underlying entity, not just a page ranking for a query.
Prove the pattern before scaling programmatic SEO
Source: Search Engine Land
- Validate a page pattern on a representative pilot before building the full library, since scale can amplify a weak idea across thousands of URLs that all need crawling, internal links and maintenance.
- Run a pre-build check comparing 10 candidate pages: if they mostly repeat the same copy with a few fields changing, the template isn't ready. Include large, mid and small markets plus thin-data edge cases in the pilot.
- Evaluate live pilot pages against 4 validation gates:
- Can Google consistently discover and index the pages
- Are pages attracting the specific queries they were built for
- Which page characteristics correlate with better performance
- Does the traffic lead to useful business behavior
- The pilot yields 3 outcomes: scale in stages when the model holds, improve and retest when only some segments work, or stop the rollout to keep weak URLs off the site.
Google Search Console links report goes a month without an update
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- The Search Console links report has not shown fresh link data since around August 8, 2026, roughly a month, versus its usual couple-of-weeks cadence.
- The report carries no timestamp, so the staleness is only detectable through manual tracking. Barry Schwartz called for Google to add a data date.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Google calls its DMA search changes the biggest quality drop in 29 years
Sources: Search Engine Land · Search Engine Roundtable · Search Engine Roundtable
- Google told Reuters the EU DMA changes mark "the largest reduction in quality of service" in its 29-year search history, tied to vertical search services rather than last week's site reputation abuse change.
- The revamped layout highlights one specialized search engine at the top followed by 2 others with fewer details, with a carousel of hotels, airlines and restaurants below and real-time prices stripped out. Rankings are set by Google's algorithm.
- For hotel queries the traditional Hotel Local Pack disappears, replaced by a multi-provider module featuring Booking.com, Expedia, Priceline and others, while a new Hotel Sites module surfaces individual hotels and links to their official websites.
- Google's 2024 test found users were measurably less satisfied and slower to find hotels, hotels lost more than 10% of traffic, and traffic to intermediary sites stayed roughly flat.
- Google published a new help document detailing regional differences in the search experience, covering aggregator units, supplier units and carousels plus eligibility criteria for VSS, CSS, direct suppliers and content providers.
Mueller says old low-value pages can still drag down site recovery
Source: Search Engine Journal
- John Mueller said on Bluesky that Google's systems may have "lost faith" in a site based on its old pages, so cleanup alone doesn't guarantee a quick change in how Google perceives it.
- His comments targeted "programmatic SEO like this," a setup generating a page per combination of domains, technologies and attributes, not programmatic SEO in general.
- Adding more filler content per page (his example was "what does php mean?") won't fix the problem. Demonstrating real value "tends to take time & significant effort."
- Google's scaled content abuse policy hinges on purpose and value rather than automation or scale alone, and Mueller's reply doesn't change any policy. He gave no specific timeline or named system.
Google Ads adds Local Customer Optimization and Store Sales in Data Manager
Source: Search Engine Land
- Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin announced 2 features for multi-location retailers, restaurants and local service businesses ahead of the holiday season.
- Local Customer Optimization is a campaign-level toggle in Performance Max store goals campaigns that prioritizes budget toward in-market nearby consumers across Google Maps, Waze and local Search. It is rolling out now.
- Store Sales in Data Manager lets advertisers connect a CRM or Google Sheets directly to feed offline sales data back into Google Ads for measurement and optimization, rolling out in the coming weeks.
Google Ads AI Dashboards begin appearing in advertiser accounts
Source: Search Engine Land
- Google Ads' AI-powered Dashboards, announced in August, are rolling out to some accounts and let advertisers build visual performance reports from simple text prompts via Gemini.
- Each report includes a real-time AI summary explaining the "why" behind performance changes rather than just the underlying numbers.
- The feature extends Google's push to put AI between advertisers and campaign data, alongside homepage AI insights and the Ask Advisor in-product agent. It was first spotted by Thomas Eccel.
Building an AI governance framework for SEO teams
Source: Search Engine Land
- Adopt a short, plain-English set of principles built on 5 pillars:
- Accuracy, treating every AI output like a junior analyst's first draft that needs checking
- Accountability, since you own every claim once you hit publish
- Security, keeping PII and confidential data out of unapproved tools
- Fairness, actively checking for bias baked into tone and framing
- Sustainability, matching the model size to the task instead of always using the priciest one
- Never put customer data, employee data or confidential business info into an AI tool your company or client hasn't approved, and get written assurance that a trial provider won't train on your data.
- An AI-fabricated stat in indexable content can become the thing an AI Overview later quotes back to someone else, raising the stakes for accuracy in SEO output.
- Build culture around the rules with a living feedback channel for wins, failures and near-misses, plus a designated person or team to flag incidents to.
