SEO Pulse: Spam Update, Generative UI in AI Overviews, Preferred Sources, and Reddit's Citation Drop
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Google began rolling out the August 2026 spam update on August 18, its third spam update this year, with no new spam policies announced. Prior rollouts varied in speed, with March finishing in under 20 hours and June taking ~2 days.
- Google's generative UI, which builds custom layouts, interactive tools, and simulations on the fly, has started reaching AI Overviews after launching in AI Mode in November alongside Gemini 3. Pages that earn traffic from embedded tools like calculators now compete with the answer itself.
- A new Preferred Sources button lets sites embed code so readers can mark them as preferred, making them more likely to appear in Top Stories and carry a preferred badge in AI Overviews and AI Mode. More than 600,000 unique sources have been selected, up from more than 345,000 in May.
- Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations fell from 3.83% (July 18-August 7) to 0.52% (August 14-17), an 86.4% drop, with the cause unconfirmed. Lily Ray and Ross Simmonds framed Reddit as a reflection of brand rather than a reliable citation strategy.
