Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
The GEO Trust Gap: SEOs Want the Data but Not the Platforms Selling It
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Duane Forrester's survey of 163 AI-search practitioners found respondents rated the underlying visibility data at 4.20 out of 5 but platform investment at just 3.19, and only 44% think buying a tool in the category is worthwhile.
- Cost was not the barrier. Only 7% raised price, while 57% said either they don't believe the numbers or can't connect the data to money.
- Open-text responses centered on trust and opaque methodology (24%), ROI and attribution (20%), and non-determinism and personalization (15%), with several respondents calling prompt-list tracking a self-fulfilling prophecy with no denominator.
- On which systems matter, respondents ranked Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode at 95%, ChatGPT at 94%, Gemini 75%, Claude 64%, Perplexity 34%, and Copilot 25%.
- IBISWorld counts ~715,000 people in US SEO and marketing consulting, yet only 163 answered despite 7 promotion pushes, a gap between how much AI search is discussed and how much is actually practiced.
Why Anthropic's Claude Watermark May Be a New Text-Marking Method
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Anthropic's transparency page was updated July 23rd to say it is working across industry and academia on watermarking and preparing for legal compliance, reversing prior language that it did not provide watermarking.
- Anthropic listed 6 watermarking qualities:
- embedded directly into generated text
- imperceptible when reading the text
- no change to meaning, quality, or readability
- generated at the model level
- detectable after edits
- detectable by users and third parties
- MirrorMark, a 2026 George Mason University method, closely matches all 6 qualities by mirroring the LLM's sampling randomness at token selection, and its researchers commercialize through an entity called InvisibleID.
- MCmark, an unbiased 2025 method, is also a strong candidate but weaker under paraphrasing, dropping to 11% true-positive rate at 1% false-positive rate, versus MirrorMark's ~57.8% under heavy paraphrasing.
AI in Search / AI Overviews
How Do I Know if AI Overviews Are Taking Clicks From My Site?
Source: Search Engine Journal
- A study by researchers at the Indian School of Business and Carnegie Mellon University suggests AI Overviews could reduce clicks to webpages by as much as 38%, and no Google or third-party report yet isolates exactly how much traffic AIOs remove.
- To diagnose click loss, identify which high-traffic keywords now trigger AIOs, then compare CTR, impressions, and average rank before and after using rank trackers and Search Console. Google confirmed Search Console over-reported impressions from May 2025 through April 2026.
- The telltale sign of AIO click loss is stable rankings and impressions but declining click-through rate, or a lower CTR on AIO-triggering keywords than on similar keywords without AIOs.
- Sort affected keywords into 3 buckets:
- Defend: commercially important, conversion-driving keywords where clicks are still available
- Adapt: important keywords where AIOs no longer cite you but brand mentions still help discovery
- Depreciate: top-of-funnel informational keywords whose lost traffic was low value
- For Defend keywords, give users reasons to leave Google with tools, calculators, downloads, or gated content AIOs can't replicate. For Adapt keywords, use first-party data and answer the next question to earn citations.
Technical SEO
Misconfiguring Cloudflare Can Hurt Your SEO Badly
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Cloudflare and CDN settings meant to block AI bots and rogue crawlers can accidentally block Google, causing rankings to drop and pages to fall out of the index.
- Jonathan Bird described a site whose IT provider toggled on Cloudflare's crawl control, blocking Google for 2 weeks, breaking Google Ads billing and removing Merchant Center listings and organic traffic.
- Brodie Clark shared a case where firewall-level bot restrictions added to keep a marketplace online destroyed its SEO, resembling a core or spam update hit.
Spammy Google-Selected Canonical in Search Console
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Dan Lauer found Google Search Console's URL inspection tool listing a spammy site as the Google-selected canonical for a new, not-yet-indexed client blog.
- John Mueller said domains that previously used the same interstitial or parked page can easily produce this, and advised waiting a few weeks to see if it settles before posting in the help community.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Reddit Preserved the Part of the Internet We Broke
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Reddit posted Q2 revenue of $804.905 million (up 61%), 130.3 million daily active uniques, and $252.848 million net income, yet shares fell 21% on worries about Google traffic dependence.
- The Reuters Institute found Google organic traffic to more than 2,500 news sites fell 33% globally and 38% in the US between November 2024 and November 2025, and Pew found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary versus 15% without.
- Reddit-reported data showed users added the word Reddit to Google searches 32 billion times from December 2022 to November 2023, and Google and OpenAI both secured structured, real-time access to Reddit's conversations.
- Reddit search grew to more than 80 million weekly searchers by Q4 2025, and Reddit Answers went from 1 million weekly active uniques in Q1 to 15 million in Q4 before merging into search.
- Build organic Reddit presence carefully. One insurance client scrapped a planned ad program after Reddit banned several employee accounts, taking a month to restore, so a formal organic partner path around disclosure and account roles would help separate legitimate activity from manipulation.
Google Search Ranking Volatility Spikes on August 12-13
Source: Search Engine Roundtable

- The last confirmed updates were the June 2026 spam update (June 14 to 26) and the May 2026 core update (May 21 to June 2).
- WebmasterWorld posters reported severe traffic drops, sharp Discover declines in Brazil exceeding 70%, and AI-made niche sites appearing repeatedly in feeds.
