SEO Recap covering July 31, 2026: Search Console platform properties and AI shopping feeds
Daily summary of what matters in SEO, GEO, AEO, and AI search generated with Claude Code (beware of hallucinations)
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) & Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)
AI shopping now starts with your product feed, not your PDP
Source: Search Engine Land
- Tom Wells' March 2026 study of 43,000+ products found 83% of ChatGPT product recommendations matched Google's top 40 organic Shopping results versus 11% for Bing, with 60% of strong matches coming from the top 10 Shopping results.
- Profound's review of more than 1 million ChatGPT shopping offers found feed-sourced citations appeared as the top offer about 99.9% of the time and grew from 4.3% to about 20% of retrievals in 6 weeks, though roughly 88% of offers still come from product detail pages.
- Google added conversational attributes to the Merchant Center spec for AI features:
- Question and answer pairs
- Related product relationships (often_bought_with, accessory, substitute)
- Document links for manuals and spec sheets
- Item group title and variant options
- Popularity rank against the rest of your catalog
- Adobe reported AI-referred U.S. retail traffic up 393% year over year in Q1 and over 1,150% by December, converting 42% better than non-AI traffic, while PDPs scored just 63.5 for AI citation readability versus low 80s for homepages.
- A 4-part feed audit covers eligibility (fix GTIN and price errors first), coverage and specificity of titles, adding conversational attributes to best sellers, and keeping price and availability continuously in sync.
Technical SEO
Cloudflare's PACT is a proposal, not a live protocol
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Cloudflare announced PACT (Private Access Control Tokens) on June 22, 2026 with Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Shopify, using anonymous unlinkable tokens to prove a human is present without CAPTCHAs, logins, or fingerprinting.
- The author stresses PACT only answers whether a human is present, not whether an autonomous agent is authorized, and that second question is being addressed separately by Web Bot Auth, Google's registered web agent identity, and Estonia's state-backed agent IDs.
- Nothing is live yet. There is no origin trial or testable version, and the gap between the coalition and a usable standard is typically measured in years.
- The practical takeaway is to decide which track your traffic needs. Follow the personhood track (PACT) if your risk is fraud and fake accounts, and the authorization track if agents will transact on your site.
Google may treat abused internal search pages as a site quality issue
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Mueller and Splitt warned that indexable internal search result pages can be exploited by spammers to auto-generate thousands of URLs containing spam brands, keywords, and phone numbers, which Google may flag as hacked in Search Console.
- Splitt noted some search boxes create infinite crawl spaces, especially via "did you mean" features that spawn more pages as Google crawls, driving server load and crawl budget waste.
- The recommended fixes are to block crawling with a broad robots.txt rule (preferred and cleanest) or apply a noindex directive, since Google does not need to crawl these pages at all.
Blocking internal search results is no longer in Google's guidelines, but still advised
Source: Search Engine Roundtable
- Mueller said the requirement to block internal search result pages, added to the webmaster guidelines in 2007, is no longer listed in Google Search Essentials.
- He still recommends blocking them for technical reasons, citing server load that can slow crawling of the rest of your site and quality issues if spammers abuse the search box.
- Allowing irrelevant, indexable search pages can let spam terms plus phone numbers surface in results, which Google may flag as hacked and downgrade in rankings.
Organic Search & Algorithm Updates
Building a social topical map from Search Console platform properties
Source: Search Engine Land
- Google launched platform properties in Search Console on July 7, letting you connect YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, or X accounts and see the Google Search queries, impressions, clicks, and positions where that content appears.
- The author's agency channel logged 200,000 impressions and 87 clicks in 11 days, with 83 separate videos earning search impressions and a single "enterprise seo" cluster of 149 phrasings totaling 31,555 impressions.
- The proposed "social topical map" runs 6 steps:
- Connect and verify each platform property
- Audit what Google already surfaces and cluster query phrasings
- Build the map organized by topic, not platform
- Produce format-matched content per intent
- Embed videos on matching site pages
- Repeat as new placements generate fresh query data
- Caveats include giving data at least 28 days to become readable, YouTube data being far richer than Instagram or TikTok, and impressions signaling eligibility rather than traffic.
AI makes SEO faster, but human expertise still wins
Source: Search Engine Land
- Gemini grouped more than 2,000 declining Page 1 keywords into topical clusters and mapped them to losing URLs, work the author frames as where AI adds leverage before humans take over.
- Comparing 3 writing methods with GSC data: pure AI pages published April 2025 nearly vanished from search by January 2026, hand-rewritten hybrid pages grew clicks 12% and impressions 27% year over year, and human-first content was 8 times more likely to rank in the top position.
- More than 86% of marketers use an AI-draft, human-edit workflow, and Google's March and May 2026 core updates rewarded original research, firsthand experience, and distinctive voice while cutting low-value content.
- The piece recommends a negative prompt banning AI tells such as "delve," "surge," "paramount," "synergy," and "paradigm shift" to keep machine phrasing out of foundational ideas.
SEO Pulse: social search data for all and AI-flagged pages ranking lower
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Google made Search Console platform properties available worldwide 3 weeks after the limited rollout, letting you link Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube accounts and see Google queries across Search, Discover, and News.
- New Ahrefs data shows heavily AI-flagged pages appear in every top 10 position but tend to rank lower, with co-author Ryan Law attributing it to declining quality rather than Google acting on AI text (last year's AI-score-to-position correlation was just 0.011).
- NewzDash tracking found Top Stories carousels rendered inside AI Overviews in 15.5% of U.S. and 17.46% of U.K. news searches, and founder John Shehata reads Google's AI opt-out as likely dropping a site from those in-Overview carousels.
- John Mueller advised sites with conflicting feed and on-page structured data to fix the inconsistency rather than test which signal Google favors, since the weights and filters change over time.
