Google's June Spam Update Now Covers AI-Answer Manipulation, But Enforcement Is Hard
Source: Search Engine Journal
- Google's June spam update, the year's second, enforces its policy treating attempts to "manipulate generative AI responses" in Search as a violation.
- A Cornell Tech preprint, "Deep-Research Agents Can Be Poisoned via User-Generated Content," found about 13 words of planted text on a recurring community page inserted an attacker's chosen entity into finished reports in 38% to 51% of sessions; spreading the text across several pages pushed that to 42% to 62%.
- User-generated platforms made up 17% to 23% of all URLs retrieved, with one page appearing in as many as 48% of sub-queries within a topic cluster; tests ran on open-source agents STORM, Co-STORM, and OmniThink.
- Researchers tried three defenses (dropping user-generated sources, screening them with an LLM, and fact-checking the report) and none stopped the attack without degrading results.
- SE Ranking found Google self-citations rose to roughly 20% of AI Mode citations, and the piece notes brands have no dashboard to see whether they were cited or edged out of AI answers.
